Illinois Leads the Way, but the Feds are Hot on Their Heels...

I know we are all getting tired of hearing about these assaults on the second amendment, but we must remain vigilant and engaged...or we may yet see the death of this most vital, fundamental right. View this email in your browser
IL lawmakers charged right into the the new year, guns blazing...oh, wait, that's not right...they wasted no time attempting to keep guns in IL from blazing...well, ok, at least those owned by law-abiding citizens with no intention of actually using them to kill people.  So far, they have absolutely NO plan to get the guns away from the criminals who ignore the law and DO kill people...but, I guess, they're not as likely to get SHOT taking them from US as they are from the criminals!

The IL Senate had to pull their anti-gun-amended bills because they didn't have the votes to cram them down our throats, but Quinn and Emanuel have now turned their sights on the IL House.  Edward Acevedo has filed an amendment to Senate Bill 2899 which is of serious concern.  The amendment will be heard by the IL House Judiciary Civil Law Committee on Sunday...don't put your phones away quite yet!!!!  Read more HERE

Unfortunately, our battles on this front do not end here in IL.  While Chicago led the charge, the feds are hot on their heels!  On their first day back in Washington, House Democrats introduced EIGHT anti-gun bills!!!!  Read more HERE

PLEASE, CALL THEM NOW!

"How Strangely will the tools of a tyrant pervert the plain meaning of words."                      --Samuel Adams

There is a lot of talk about what the second amendment means or doesn't mean.  For an accurate interpretation, we must always look to the context in which it was written and to the words of its framers.

Consider these gems of wisdom:

"The laws that forbid the carrying of arms are laws of such a nature.  They disarm only those who are neither inclined nor determined to commit crimes...Such laws make things worse for the assaulted and better for the assailants; they serve rather to encourage than to prevent homicides, for an unarmed man may be attacked with greater confidence than an armed man."
--Thomas Jefferson (quoting Cesare Beccaria)

"A free people ought to be armed."
--George Washington

"No free man shall ever be debarred the use of arms."                        --Thomas Jefferson

"The Constitution of most of our states (and of the United States) assert that all power is inherent in the people; that they may exercise it by themselves; that it is their right and duty to be at all times armed." --Thomas Jefferson

"Those who would give up essential liberty to purchase a little temporary safety, deserve neither liberty nor safety."
--Benjamin Franklin

"A free people ought not only to be armed and disciplined, but they should have sufficient arms and ammunition to maintain a status of independence from any who might attempt to abuse them, which would include their own government." --George Washington

"The strongest reason for people to retain the right to keep and bear arms is, as a last resort, to protect themselves against tyranny in government."                    --Thomas Jefferson

"Arms in the hands of citizens may be used at individual discretion in private self defense."
--John Adams

"On every occasion [of Constitutional interpretation] let us carry ourselves back to the time when the Consttitution was adopted, recollect the spirit manifested in the debates, and instead of trying [to force] what meaning may be squeezed out of the text, or invented against it, [instead let us] conform to the probable one in which it was passed."
--Thomas Jefferson

"Necessity is the plea for every infringement of human freedom.
It is the argument of tyrants; it is
the creed of slaves."
--William Pitt

"To disarm the people is the most effectual way to enslave them."        --George Mason

"The right of the people to keep and bear arms shall not be infringed.  A well regulated militia, composed of the body of the people, trained to arms, is the best and most natural defense of a free country. --James Madison

"A militia, when properly formed, are in fact the people themselves...and include all men capable of bearing arms."
--Richard Henry Lee

"The Constitution shall never be construed to prevent the people of the United States who are peaceable citizens from keeping their own arms."                     --Samuel Adams

"Guard with jealous attention the public liberty.  Suspect everyone who approaches that jewel.  Unfortunately, nothing will preserve it but downright force.  Whenever you give up that force, you are ruined...the great object is that every man be armed.  Everyone who is able might have a gun."
--Patrick Henry
It's only common sense...Chicago has a gun ban in place.  If gun bans were effective, Chicago would not have the highest gun murder rate in the nation--500 gun murders in 2012!!

Your calls are making a difference!

***UPDATE***
An IL Senate Committee took an unrelated bill that had already passed the IL House and amended it to include ridiculous, second-amendment-trampling gun-banning language.  Due to the number of calls, emails and faxes to State Senators, Cullerton has not been able to get enough votes to ram it through, so he has pulled the bills for now (along with the gay marriage bill).  Rumor has it he is only 4 or 5 votes shy of passage, so we must keep calling and writing!  Thank you for the calls you have already made, but please keep it up!  If they can twist just a few more arms, they will bring it forward again.

Please pass this on to Second Amendment supporters among your family and  friends
-- urge them to make their voices heard as well!

You can also file a Witness Slip in Springfield to voice your support or opposition to an upcoming bill.  This allows you the opportunity to make sure your opinion goes on record.

Follow this link to FILE A WITNESS SLIP
(for business or agency and persons represented, you can list "myself" or something along those lines--then mark "record of appearance only" -- unless you intend to submit written testimony)

Assaults like this on our Constitutionally protected liberties illustrate all too clearly why WE MUST STAY ENGAGED!
We the People are the last defense against tyranny.  To some, that may sound paranoid, but those who are paying attention know this is the sad reality in which we now live!

PLEASE join us for the
SVTP Leadership Council Meeting
at 9:00 am on
Saturday, January 12th
at the Sterling Public Library.

We need YOUR help to make sure that we are able to continue to educate, inform and mobilize liberty-loving folks to protect our way of life against these and many other power grabs in the future!

Don't ever buy into the argument that the founders could have never imagined the world in which we live today and therefore were inadequate to frame a system to govern citizens of today!

They were scholars of history and evil has been present since the dawn of time.  They knew it well.  The system they created, in its true form, is all we need to maintain order and prosperity--even in the times of advanced technology in which we now live.

"
When the governments fear the people, there is liberty.  When people fear the government there is tyranny." --Thomas Jefferson

To disarm the people is the first step in making them weak and vulnerable to manipulation and restraint.

We must stand firm.  Without the second amendment, we have no way to guarantee the safety of the rest  of them!
